 History of the Ford Edge

For the 2007 model year, Ford unveiled its first car-based crossover, the Ford Edge. It offered seating for five with plenty of interior space, something that was very appealing to families. And, with its taller ride height and spacious cargo area, it checked all the boxes.

Right from the start, the Edge offered drivers a strong engine. The 2007 model came standard with a 3.5-liter V6 engine rated at 265 horsepower. Ford paired it with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and buyers could choose between front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

Ford also delivered with unique available features, including a Vista Roof and power liftgate. The Ford SYNC system was first introduced in the Edge for the 2008 model year, along with a new Limited trim.

In 2009, Ford added the Edge Sport model which included features like 20-inch aluminum wheels, unique body accents, and chromed exhaust tips. This model was popular among buyers who wanted something that stood out from the crowd. The 2010 model year carried over unchanged.

For the 2011 model year, the Edge got updated exterior styling and new interior elements. Buyers also got to choose from two additional engines, including a 3.5-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 and a more fuel-efficient, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

Over the next few years, the Edge received only minor updates. However, it was completely redesigned for the 2015 model year. The new 2015 Edge gained a more spacious interior with 73.4 cubic feet of cargo space-before 2015, it only had up to 68.9 cubic feet. Along with more cargo space, the new Edge gave passengers more room, too, especially in the second row. This means that parents can more easily fit car seats inside, even three in a row, if needed.
